What's in a Name?

Lord Thomas Wentworth established my old regiment in the seventeenth century. More than three centuries later, while studying at Sandhurst, I came across Field Marshal William Slim. Until then, I knew almost nothing about him.

Yet he proved to be one of the people who left the greatest impression on me. It wasn’t the military history that stayed with me. It was his quiet authority. Despite being regarded as one of the greatest leaders of the twentieth century, he remained remarkably discreet.

Thomas Slim is not a military brand. It is shaped by a respect for detail and the belief that something made well does not need to seek attention. Its value reveals itself slowly: in the feel of it in the hand, the trust it earns, and the memories it gathers over time.
